Do you swatch?

For years I didn't swatch and the sweaters sometimes fit and sometimes didn't.  What a lot of work for nothing, all because I didn't want to take the time to swatch.  No longer.  I swatch every time now.  Most of the time, I rip out the swatch in case I need the yarn for the sweater.  But for one of the next sweaters I'm making for myself, I've decided to keep the swatches.  I might be able to make them into something later.  The pattern calls for size 7 needles or whatever fits the gauge.  I'm not using the yarn it calls for.  I've decided to use some off-white worsted I used earlier to make a queen-sized bedspread.  I ended up making a swatch for size 7, size 6, size 5 and size 4 before I got the gauge I needed..  The instructions call for a swatch for 3 different portions--stockinette, double seed stitch and a pattern.  Here are the results of my swatches.  This first photo shows all sizes of the stockinette stitch.  For the first two swatches I forgot to make a border all the way around to keep the edges from curling.

This is the sweater.   It can be found here, free on the Berroco site.  Isn't it beautiful?  I hope it looks as good in off-white.

I also ordered some yarn in a medium gray color to make this sweater, free from Berroco, found here.

And...I'm still working on Lily's sweater.  What?  Who says you can't have so many knitting projects going at once?

Now on another topic....does anyone know of a point and shoot camera that is compatible with iPad?  I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W350 but when I use the Apple Camera Adapter, it doesn't recognize my camera.  I like the photos from my camera better than my iPhone but if I want to blog from my iPad, it's a multi-step process to get the photos over there.  If you can help, that would be great.

Well, gotta go...my knitting awaits me.  Hmmmm....what shall I work on today?

Hope you have a good day.

Hello All

What the heck is going on?  I don't blog for a month or so and now that I want to, either my computer or Blogger is having a problem.  I restored my computer back to a previous setpoint.  Hopefully this will be the end of the problem.  Stay tuned.

So what have I been up to...not much.  I've been walking a few times a week with a new walking buddy, Diana.  She has a 4 year old dog very similar in look and size as Bailey.  Her dog, Spirit has had quite a bit of training so we're working on sit, down, stay, wait and walking nicely on a leash.  Bailey is making good progress.  At some point I'll probably enroll him in classes but for now these commands are enough to keep him occupied.  I took him a few weeks ago to a puppy play date at a local pet care site but he was pretty afraid of the other small dogs/puppies.  There were only five there but one was a pretty active terrier who chased him around and of course the more Bailey ran, the more the dog chased him.  We'll have to try again at some point but for now, we're working on meeting dogs on our walking route.  Bailey is 8 months old now.

I did a little sewing (in the sewing room) the other day.  I finally got around to putting up a curtain.  It's one that I'd made in my other apartment with the front side brown and back side green.  For this apartment In pinned some paper-pieced blocks to the green side and put it up.  Notice I said I pinned them.  I did not sew them.  I lost interest pretty quickly.

I haven't used the sewing room a lot since moving here but it's nice to have just the same.  I've been working on my hexie quilt and crocheting a dresser doily.  Photos later.

I was armchair shopping a few weeks ago and came across a bedspread and curtain set that was just so pretty and feminine, I had to have it.  It's the first time since I was eight years old that I had a store bought matching set.  I love it.  My new bedroom is large enough that I could have the bed on an angle to add interest.  I've spent a lot of time passing by the room just to admire it.

I hope all is well with everyone.  Even though I haven't been blogging, I have been keeping up with reading all your blogs.

Hope you have a good day.

This and That

Let's see....what have I been up to?  Hexies, Paper Piecing and a new handbag.

The bag isn't exactly what I originally planned but I absolutely love how it turned out.  And it's just the right size.  I may add some pockets for my phone and camera.  I haven't decided yet.

Hope you have a good day.

Goodbye Google Reader

If you've been following along in blog land lately, you know that come summer Google Reader is going away.  A good portion of the blogs I follow have decided to go with Bloglovin.  So I have too.  It was easy to import the blogs I follow.  I'm all for easy.  Follow my blog with Bloglovin

And now, what you've all been waiting for...I can finally show you the wall hanging I made for my daughter.  It's approx 37 inches x 48 inches.  The first photo shows the true colors and the second shows it hanging on the wall.  The light was all wrong in her livingroom and I couldn't get it right.

Spring Has Sprung

Everyone had a good time trying to pick out which flower they liked the best.

Hope you have a good day.

Hmmmm....

Guess what I was doing at 5 am this morning...mopping the kitchen floor. Couldn't sleep. I've been up since 4. I'm planning to use the floor to put the wall hanging sandwich together today. Sorry...no photos. My daughter will be reading this.

Hope you have a good day.

This and That

It's been a shopping sort of day.  First, off to Joann's to take advantage of their Coupon Commotion.  I had four 50% off coupons.  I bought what fabric I needed to finish the wall hanging and extra for my stash, rotary blades, new quilting gloves and thread.

After that, I stopped in at Goodwill.  I don't like shopping for clothes and most of the time do it online but I felt the urge to shop and didn't want to pay a lot.  I bought four tops/blouses for layering, a necklace and two pairs of earrings, all for $24.  You can't beat that.

Then I headed to Walmart to pick up some hair color--the grays are starting to peak through.

If all that wasn't exciting enough, I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to eliminate the odor coming from my garbage disposal.  It's been smelling quite fowl.  I never had the problem in my old apartment so this  cleaning thing is new to me.  I've tried a few of the suggestions listed on the internet.  We'll see if any of those solve the problem.

I'm especially happy to tell you that I LOVE my washing machine and dryer.  Not having my own for over 12 years, it's now a pleasant task to do my washing.  Especially my new fabric.

I didn't get to sewing in the sewing room yesterday.  I spent most of the day reading.  I did however sew some hexies.

Hope you had a good day.

Busy Hands

I didn't feel like sitting down to the sewing machine on Saturday so I worked on hexies instead.  Here are the ones I completed:

After that little break, I couldn't wait to get back to paper-pieced blocks today.

I'm not crazy about my color choices on the house block but I really like the other blocks.

Hope you had a good day.

Decisions, Decisions

This morning I finalized the design for my daughter's wall hanging.  And I thought I knew the exact colors I wanted to use but as the day moved on, I realized that I may want to change it up a bit.  I used EQ7 to come up with some layouts and color schemes but I just can't make up my mind.  I guess I need to give it some more thought.

Here are the paper-pieced blocks I completed today.

I like how vibrant they look against the blue background.  Hmmmm.....

Hope you had a good day.

More Progress

Today was a much better day paper-piecing blocks.  I'm using larger pieces of fabric and trimming the excess rather than trying to make smaller pieces fit.  Much less frustrating.  Also in the photo are the three hexies I sewed last night.

Hope you had a good day.

No Compliments Please

I received such nice comments on the paper-pieced blocks I sewed the other day that I was feeling pretty smug about how well they went together and no mistakes in them.  Since then I've had nothing but trouble and the mistakes weren't noticed until the blocks were completed.  Grrrrrrr!  I ended up changing the blocks a little to repair rather than unsew a number of steps back.  I'm okay with it and if I don't tell you which blocks they are, you probably won't be able to pick them out.  I did manage to complete two without a problem.  Let's hope that means I'm back on a roll.

You can see that Bailey is really upset with sewing trials and tribulations.

I finished a pair of socks I started last week.

Hope you had a good day.

More Paper Piecing

I love my sewing room.  I've been taking my iPad (Netflix), coffee and Bailey in with me and have been enjoying being able to sew again.  I'm totally taken with the book, 300 Paper-Pieced Quilt Blocks by Carol Doak.  I've finished a few more that I thought you might enjoy.

And last but not least.... my helper.

Hope you had a good day.

Keeping Busy

I can finally show you the wall hanging I created for my daughter.  Her request was for blues and a snowman.  Some of the snowflakes I crocheted last winter were incorporated in the design.

Corey's Wall Hanging

I haven't been doing much sewing lately.  Since I got Bailey, I've had to sew in the livingroom, cut in the bedroom and iron in the hallway.  There are a couple gates to climb over to go from room to room.  But all that will change soon.  I put my name on the list for a two bedroom apartment just before Christmas.  I wanted either a first or second floor and the apartment had to have sunshine.  That severely limited the qualifying apartments because most of the two bedrooms face the woods without sun.  Only 5 apartments fit the criteria.  But guess what......one became available and on top of that, it's the only apartment in the complex that has a washer and dryer.  Woo Hoo!  I move in the weekend of Feb 16.  I'll be glad when it's over.  I hate packing and moving.  I wish I could just close my eyes and be there.

In the mean time, I've finished two more pairs of socks.

I've been busily putting together a large kit for doing hexies.  I'll be away babysitting grandchildren for about 10 days and will need something to keep my hands busy.

Bailey went for his first haircut yesterday.  I had intended to keep him in fairly full coat because I love the fluffy look of it but it takes time to brush him everyday and it's not practical for taking a walk each day.  He really needs the exercise to burn off some of his energy.  Here's the before and after:

Bailey before

Bailey after

Bailey after

It'll take me a few days to get used to it but I think I'll like it in the long run.

I probably won't be blogging much over the next few weeks what with babysitting and moving but I'll catch up with you after.

Hope you have a good day.

Youse not fat, youse fluffy!

Bailey just awakened from a nap

I found some scrap yarn and knit a new pair of socks for myself.  I experimented with using two strands as reinforcement for the heels.

I bought some cotton yarn for weaving and had intended to weave a couple of cotton hand towels.  But I changed my mind midstream and have decided to work the piece into a vest.  It's still in the planning stage.  I had a really tough time keeping the tension even.  I wanted a really tight weave so I used four strands as one, two white, two blue.  That may have been the reason for the tension problems.  It did make for a rather interesting weave pattern.

Here's a close up of the weaving.

I've also finished a winter wall hanging for my daughter but I can't show the whole thing yet.  Here's a sneak peek.

Hope you have a good day.
